About EAPOS

In 1970 in Egypt, pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus were still practiced by general ophthalmologists. At that time, the main universities in Egypt – namely, Cairo University Faculty of Medicine, the oldest medical school in the Middle East, Ain Shams University, Alexandria University, Mansoura University, and Al-Azhar University – had started to recognize its importance as a subspecialty.

When the Egyptian Ophthalmologic Society (EOS), founded in 1901, developed subspecialty clubs in 1997, Professor Mohamed Elsada founded the Egyptian Group of Pediatric Eye Surgeons (EGPES).

The EGPES organized and presented two principle symposia at the annual and summer meetings of the EOS, which represented this subspecialty during the meetings. In addition, the EGPES organized 12 international annual meetings all over Egypt, including one that was held in Beirut, Lebanon. These meetings hosted many international guest speakers from all over the world.

In 2019, the EGPES was officially registered in the Ministry of Social Affairs under the name Egyptian Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (EAPOS). The organization’s goals are to advance the quality of children’s eye care, support the training of pediatric ophthalmologists, support research activities in pediatric ophthalmology, and advance the care of adults with strabismus.

The future of pediatric ophthalmology in Egypt is promising. The EAPOS meetings are becoming more attractive and instructive to ophthalmologists; the scientific material is becoming highly educational, and the number of young ophthalmologists attracted to this subspecialty is increasing continuously.
